# How to convert a ChatGPT answer to Word, with working equations

> Turn a ChatGPT answer into a Word document where every formula is a real, editable Word equation. Works with ChatGPT's \( \) and \[ \] maths, tables and code.

Updated 2026-10-21. Try it: https://mathfold.com/?example=chatgpt#convert

## Step by step

1. Under the ChatGPT answer, click the copy icon. This copies the answer as Markdown, formulas included.
2. Paste it into the Mathfold editor, or drop a saved .md file onto it.
3. Check the live preview. Formulas, tables and headings render exactly as they will in Word.
4. Click Download Word. Click Download PDF if you also need a PDF with the same layout.

## Why pasting ChatGPT into Word breaks the maths

When you select a rendered answer in the browser and paste it into Word, formulas arrive as plain text, as doubled characters, or as raw LaTeX such as `\frac{n \cdot s}{8}`. The copy button is better: it gives you the answer as Markdown. But Word cannot read Markdown either, so you get hash signs, asterisks, pipe characters and backslashes instead of headings, bold text, tables and equations.

## What ChatGPT's Markdown looks like

ChatGPT wraps inline formulas in `\(` and `\)`, and display formulas in `\[` and `\]`. It numbers its steps, uses `###` headings and builds tables with pipes. This is a real answer in that style:

```markdown
To feed \( n \) people who each eat \( s \) slices, with 8 slices per pizza:
\[
P = \left\lceil \frac{n \cdot s \cdot f}{8} \right\rceil
\]
where \( f \approx 1.2 \) is the **3 a.m. factor**. At $12 per pizza, 21 pizzas cost $252.
```

## What Mathfold does with it

- **Formulas** in `\( \)`, `\[ \]`, `$ $` and `$$ $$` become native Word equations, inline or on their own line.
- **Prices** like $12 stay text. Mathfold only treats a dollar sign as maths when the content looks like maths.
- **Headings** become Word's Heading 1, 2 and 3 styles, so the Navigation pane and a table of contents work.
- **Tables** become real Word tables. The header row repeats on every page, and a table that is too wide for portrait gets a landscape page of its own.
- **Code blocks** keep their monospace font and syntax colours.
- **Numbered steps, bullet lists and task lists** keep their nesting.

## Word or PDF?

Both come from the same layout, so they look the same. Pick Word when someone needs to edit the document, and PDF when it should look identical on every screen and printer. You can download both from one paste.

## Questions

### Can I edit the equations in Word afterwards?

Yes. Every formula becomes a native Word equation (Office Math), the same object Word creates with Insert, Equation. Click it and edit it like any other equation. LibreOffice opens them as editable formulas too.

### ChatGPT wrote prices like $12. Will those turn into maths?

No. Mathfold checks what follows a dollar sign. Amounts such as $12 or $252 stay as text, while $x^2$ or \( x^2 \) become equations.

### Can I convert a whole conversation, not just one answer?

Yes. Paste several answers one after another. Each heading becomes a Word heading, so the Navigation pane works, and you can tick Contents to add a table of contents.

### Is my ChatGPT text stored?

No. The text is converted in memory and discarded right after. Mathfold keeps only your account and a monthly download count.
