# Gemini to Word: fix formulas that lost their backslashes

> Text copied from Gemini often turns \[ x \] into [ x ] and loses the LaTeX backslashes. Mathfold detects those broken formulas and turns them into editable Word equations.

## Step by step

1. Copy the Gemini answer, either with the copy button or by selecting the text.
2. Paste it into the Mathfold editor. Broken formulas are detected automatically.
3. Check the preview. Every formula should be typeset; anything that is not is shown as source so you can spot it.
4. Download Word or PDF.

## Three ways copied maths gets damaged

Formulas rarely survive a trip through the clipboard intact. These are the three most common kinds of damage, and Mathfold repairs each of them before converting:

| What you see | What happened | What Mathfold does |
|---|---|---|
| `[ E = mc^2 ]` on its own line | The backslashes of `\[ \]` were dropped | Restores a display formula |
| `\\( x^2 \\)` | The text was JSON-escaped by an API | Un-escapes, then converts |
| `$sqrt(x^2+y^2)$` | The tool used AsciiMath, not LaTeX | Detects AsciiMath and converts it |

## A real example

This is what a pasted answer about a spherical cow looked like, with all three problems at once:

```markdown
[ r = \left( \frac{3V}{4\pi} \right)^{1/3} \approx 0.52 \text{ m} ]
\\( v_t = \sqrt{\frac{2mg}{\rho C_d A}} \approx 154 \text{ m/s} \\)
The cross-section in AsciiMath: $A = pi r^2 ~~ 0.86$
```

Every one of these becomes a proper equation in the Word file. If a formula still cannot be parsed, it is printed as source in a monospace font, and the preview tells you how many formulas failed, so nothing disappears silently.

## Bold labels and bullet lists

Gemini answers often start with a bold line instead of a heading and use `*` bullets with bold labels. Those come through as bold text and real Word bullet lists. If you want proper headings for the Navigation pane, change the bold line to `## Heading` before converting.

## Questions

### Why do my formulas look like [ F = ma ] after copying?

Somewhere between the chat window and your clipboard, the backslashes of the LaTeX delimiters \[ and \] were dropped. What is left is square brackets around LaTeX. Mathfold recognises a line that is a bracket pair around maths and restores it as a display formula.

### Will normal square brackets in my text become formulas?

No. Mathfold only converts brackets whose content looks like LaTeX, for example with \frac, ^, _ or = signs and maths letters. A sentence in brackets, a citation like [1] or a Markdown link stays as it was.

### What about formulas with double backslashes like \\( x \\)?

That is JSON-escaped LaTeX, common when the answer came through an API. Mathfold un-escapes it before converting.

### Gemini can export to Google Docs. Why use Mathfold?

Export to Docs is fine for plain text. Use Mathfold when you need a .docx with native Word equations, wide tables on landscape pages, Mermaid diagrams, or a PDF with the same layout.
