# Markdown to Word (.docx) online

> Convert Markdown to a Word .docx in the browser. Headings become Word styles, footnotes become real footnotes, tables get repeating headers and formulas become equations.

Updated 2026-10-21. Try it: https://mathfold.com/?example=coffee#convert

## Step by step

1. Paste your Markdown into the editor, or open a .md file. Drop images in next to it.
2. Pick a theme and a page size. Free accounts use the Standard theme; Pro unlocks Academic, Modern and Compact.
3. Watch the preview update as you type.
4. Download Word.

## How each Markdown element ends up in Word

Most converters make Markdown look right. Mathfold maps each element to the Word feature built for it, so the document behaves like one written in Word:

| Markdown | In the Word file |
|---|---|
| `#`, `##`, `###` headings | Heading 1, 2, 3 styles, shown in the Navigation pane |
| `title:` in front matter | A title block with subtitle, author and date |
| `**bold**`, `*italic*`, `~~strike~~` | Character formatting |
| `[^1]` footnotes | Real Word footnotes at the bottom of the page |
| Tables | Word tables with a repeating header row and column widths sized to the content |
| Wide tables | A landscape section for that table only |
| `- [x]` task lists | Check boxes |
| Fenced code | Monospace text with syntax colours |
| `> [!NOTE]` alerts | A coloured callout |
| `$...$` and `$$...$$` | Native Word equations |
| ` ```mermaid ` | A drawn diagram, sized to the page |

## Page setup that just works

Pages are A4 by default (Letter, A5, A3 and Legal are one click away), with page numbers in the footer. Tick Contents to start the document with a table of contents. The PDF download uses exactly the same layout, page breaks included.

## Example

```markdown
**Coffee half-life**: for a ceramic mug $k \approx 0.03$, so
$$t_{1/2} = \frac{\ln 2}{k} \approx 23 \text{ minutes}$$
| Vessel | After 30 min |
|---|---:|
| Ceramic mug | 47 °C |
| Steel thermos | 79 °C |
```

## Questions

### Which Markdown flavour is supported?

CommonMark with GitHub extensions (tables, task lists, strikethrough, autolinks, footnotes, alerts like > [!NOTE]), YAML front matter for the title, subtitle, author and date, maths in all common delimiters, and Mermaid code blocks.

### Do images work?

Yes. Drop or paste images into the editor; Mathfold inserts the reference for you. They are embedded in the .docx and scaled to fit the page. For privacy, the web app does not download images from other websites, so save them first and drop them in.

### Will the Word file use proper styles?

Yes. Headings use Word's built-in Heading styles, body text uses Normal, code uses a monospace style. Change a style in Word and the whole document follows.

### Is there a command-line version?

Yes. The same engine is available through the REST API, so you can convert files from scripts and CI pipelines.
