Step by step

In Claude, click Copy under the response (or the copy button of an artifact). You get Markdown.
Paste it into the Mathfold editor.
Check the preview. Mermaid diagrams are drawn and equations are typeset.

How Claude writes maths

Claude uses dollar signs: $...$ for inline formulas and $$...$$ for display formulas. For derivations it writes \begin{aligned} blocks with & alignment points. It also likes Mermaid code blocks for flowcharts and sequence diagrams, and Python code with type hints. All of this is Markdown, which Word does not read.

Inline $...$ and display $$...$$ formulas as native, editable Word equations.
Multi-line aligned blocks as a single equation with the rows lined up.
Mermaid diagrams drawn and placed to fit the page. A very wide diagram turns its page to landscape; a very tall one is scaled or split across pages.
Code blocks with syntax colours, tables with a repeating header row, and task lists with check boxes.

Connect Claude directly

If you use Claude Code or another MCP client, add Mathfold as a remote MCP server and Claude can produce the .docx or PDF itself, without copying and pasting:

Then ask: "Write the report and save it as a Word file with Mathfold." Claude sends the Markdown, and Mathfold returns a download link that stays valid for 30 minutes.

Questions

Does it work with Claude artifacts?

Yes, for Markdown and Mermaid artifacts. Copy the artifact's content and paste it into Mathfold. Code artifacts such as React components are programs, not documents, so they appear as code blocks.

Can Claude create the Word file by itself?

Yes, through the Mathfold MCP server at https://mathfold.com/mcp. Claude Code and other MCP clients that can send an API key call the convert_markdown tool and get back a download link. Create a key on the Developers page.

What happens to \begin{aligned} blocks?

They become one Word equation with the rows aligned on the & signs, the same way they look in Claude. align, align*, gather, cases and matrix environments work too.

Are Mermaid diagrams editable in Word?

They are inserted as high-resolution images sized to the page. Keep the Mermaid code if you want to change the diagram later; Mathfold redraws it from the code on every conversion.
